BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4) – CBS4 has learned that Adams County has agreed to pay a woman $250,000 over a strip search earlier this year at the Adams County Jail.
Although all the money being paid out is entirely funded by taxpayer dollars, officials are refusing to release any details about what happened or why they have agreed to the payout.
“The county has entered into a confidentiality agreement with the claimant as part of the settlement agreement. Any further response regarding this issue would violate the spirit and intent of that agreement,” wrote Deputy Adams County attorney Heidi Miller.
The county is refusing to identify who is being paid or precisely what the claims are. Adams County Commissioners agreed to the settlement in an executive session.
CBS4 has learned that the woman being paid by the county never actually filed a lawsuit against the county. But her attorney had been in negotiations with the county lawyers, and officials were deeply concerned that if the strip search incident did become a lawsuit, it could cost the county far more in damages and attorneys fees.
Sources have told CBS4 that the woman was being strip searched as she was being booked into the jail, but that at least one male deputy witnessed part of the strip search.
