Why You Should Start a Dog Walking Business

The following is a guest post by Jim Masterson, author of How to Start a Dog Walking Business: Dog Walking Jobs For Fun and Profit.

Have you ever considered starting your very own dog walking business?

If so, you’re not alone, and the timing couldn’t be better for you. That’s because a dog walking business is one of the easiest “start-up” businesses around, and the demand for dog walking services today is trending to the moon.

In fact, becoming a professional dog walker is a terrific way to combine your love of dogs, the outdoors, and the opportunity for financial independence into a truly rewarding career! And if you have never imagined yourself as the owner of a successful dog walking business, this exciting new opportunity may be a perfect fit for you if you are:

  • Out of work or under-employed
  • Stuck in a job that you can’t stand
  • Looking for a fresh and exciting opportunity
  • Enjoy being outdoors and could use a little exercise
  • Appreciate the company of dogs and other dog-lovers
  • Wanting desperately to enjoy the freedom to finally “be you own boss”.

Here are just a few of the advantages to starting your very own professional dog walking service:

There’s BIG demand for dog walking services: The number of people searching for reliable dog walkers has never been higher, especially if you live in or near an urban area. For instance, a quick search of Google tells us that there are over 590 people are searching for dog walkers in Philadelphia online every month! You’ll find even more potential customers if you live near Chicago (with over 1900Google searches per month), and there are almost 4000 searches per month for dog walking services in New York City alone. The demand is phenomenal, and this means the opportunity for you is huge.

Flexible hours and high earning potential: One of the best things of being your own boss is the ability to set your own hours. Dog walking is by no means a “regular” 9-5 job. For example, starting your own dog walking business would allow you the time flexibility to see your kids on the bus in the morning, and see them off the bus when they arrive home from school. And in term of income, it’s possible to earn $50 per hour for your dog walking services, making it quite easy to create $1000/week paydays year-round. And if you choose to “go pro” and hire employees of your own, you can leverage their skills into a 6-figure a year business.

Fresh air and exercise await you. Believe me, as a professional dog walker, you will never have to worry about joining a health club, because you’ll be outside walking and enjoying the great outdoors . In fact, walking pooches for a living is a terrific way to get in shape and stay in shape! I absolutely love being able to walk dogs outside in the fresh air and sunshin, and you may too.

Hang out with dogs (of course!): Well, if you’re a regular reader of ThePhillyDog.com (like me), chances are you fall into this general category as well (lol!). Walking dogs is certainly one of the best ways to hang out with man’s best friend. You will be able to interact with breeds that you have never been introduced to before, each with their own distinct personality and character.

It’s a fantastic way to meet people. It’ s true… some of my best friends in the world I actually met at the local dog park, plastic baggie in hand! Dogs are the best social “buffers” around, and it’s very easy to approach somebody that you have never met before and make an introduction through your dogs! In fact, I know of at least 2 couples in my circle of doggie friends who met at the dog park (it’s even better than match.com!)

Starting a dog walking business is easy and rewarding in many ways, but of course it doesn’t happen without personal effort and commitment; and a little insider “know how”. At the end of the day, this is a business like anything other, and you must treat it as such in order for it to thrive.

You’ll also need to learn things like how to manage and promote your new business, how to find and interact with clients, and how to get your business found “online”, which the first stop for 78% of all pet owners looking for dog walking services.

Believe me, I made every mistake in the book when I started my own dog walking business, but there is no reason that YOU to have to start at the very bottom of the learning curve. That’s why I wrote this book for you! It’s called “How to Start a Dog Walking Business: Dog Walking Jobs For Fun and Profit”. And it’s the absolute quickest and easiest way for you to get the “insiders information” that you’ll need to get your new pet walking business up and running in no time flat.

Just CLICK HERE to have a look for yourself at Amazon.com. I’ve got handfuls of 5-star reviews for this 158 page “owner’s manual” of dog walking careers, and I would love to hear what you think as well!

Happy Holidays (and happy dog-walking!).

As Republican senators suddenly break out the effusive praise for Democratic Senator John Kerry as the right choice over Susan Rice for Secretary of State, well, there's a whole lot of flip-flopping on the not-so-fast track to Foggy Bottom. We should, of course, grant this praise as heartfelt and sincere — not at all tied to blocking President Obama from getting his first pick or opening up a Massachusetts Senate seat for just-defeated Scott Brown — and instead simply marvel at how far we've come in the last eight years. Many, many reporters and pundits have complained that Washington is broken, and that the Senate is dysfunctional. But just take a look at the endorsements from Friday's heartfelt story of GOP love for Kerry in The New York Times — then look at what the same senators said back when he was running for president — and the healing across party lines is there for the world to see. That or the blocking thing.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins

In 2012, the Times reports that Collins is thrilled at the idea of Kerry as America's top diplomat:

Mr. Kerry, [Collins] added, "would be an excellent appointment and would be easily confirmed by his colleagues."

On MSNBC's Hardball on September 2, 2004, Collins had quite a dim view of Kerry's instincts on foreign policy. She said of Zell Miller's Republican National Convention speech:

I thought the part of the speech that was most effective was when he went through all of the weapon systems that John Kerry had voted against and talked about how important they had been to our troops. That part of the speech I thought was a devastating indictment of Senator Kerry's record on defense issues.

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman

In 2012, Portman says Kerry's nomination would be a breeze:

Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, speaking of [UN Ambassador and potential State nominee Susan] Rice, said: "I think there are other good choices for secretary of state, better choices probably. I think Senator Kerry is one of them. He would have an easy time here."

On MSNBC's Hardball October 5, 2004, Portman found Kerry's foreign policy views quite troubling. He said of Dick Cheney's focus during the vice-presidential debate:

He'll look at John Kerry's 20-year record in the Senate, which is out of the mainstream. And he did support a lot of tax increases and did he support a lot of cuts in intelligence and defense.

And he explained how hard it was to prep Cheney for the debates, because Kerry and running mate John Edwards were such flip-floppers:

It is interesting when I think back a few months ago, because, at that time, John Edwards was saying on the stump what John Kerry was saying, which is sort of wrong war, wrong place, wrong time. And then it was, we're going to win this thing. And then it was, in six months, we'll have half the troops out and then within four years. So you're not sure which position to be using, because you want to be authentic.

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski

2012:

“I think he would do a great job,” gushed Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska. “Anyone who has worked with Senator Kerry knows his good, hard work ethic and his expertise on foreign relations.”

Murkowski in 2004:

"It's so important not to have John Kerry in office."

Bag Rack Inventor Markets To The Traveler
Nov 30th 2012, 15:54

Ever wish you had some way to hold your bag open for you, while you try to stuff it with whatever you need? That is just one of the many uses the Bag Rack has. Drew Schiller, the man behind the rack, is hoping to add travel to that list.

The all American-made BagRack – moulded by a manufacturer in Indiana and packaged in Kentucky – includes a universal adapter which it's claimed allows consumers to hang grocery or trash bags "from the top, the side or from underneath any smooth non-porous surface: glass, metal, plastic (and) fibreglass."

Assembly of the back rack is a breeze. The most critical element is – of course – finding a suitable surface from which to hang it or attach it. Some interior work surfaces can be temperamental and other factors like dirt, motion, or changes in temperature may affect adhesion of the suction cups.

The physical strength of the plastic bag also comes into play, open it too wide and the bag handles lose their inherent structural strength. "The whole concept of my design is to hold it (the bag) open in its strongest position. So it only holds it open four inches" said Schiller.

It has taken BagRack Systems just over two years to bring the product to market. "I definitely followed the route of trial and error" said Schiller, whose first prototype was manufactured out of Styrofoam, then a coat hanger, hardwood, and Stereolithography (SLA®) before arriving at the ultimate plastic moulded version. Although Schiller didn't have the advantage of an engineering degree – he has a BSc in Business – he's always been a self-starter. "I've always been a problem solver and a creative person," he said. "I'd always be thinking about better ways to do things."

Start at the End: How Companies Can Grow Bigger and Faster by Reversing Their Business Pla

Start at the end

Business owners, and their teams, often lose their way in the midst of the day-to-day stress of generating sales and profits. Suddenly, everyone becomes so focused on short-term goals that the entire organization loses sight of the long-term vision. The solution is to “start at the end.” When you know where you want your business to end up, you can reverse engineer your business plan to get you there. With a detailed vision of the end, you and your team will stay focused and energized, always moving toward that ultimate goal.

Whether your goal is to sell your business for millions, multiply your revenues, expand operations to a new location, or generate more profits, Start at the End offers a unique approach and action steps for business owners and entrepreneurs to redevelop your business plan. You’ll learn how to re-create your long-term vision, and then make continuous progress to achieve that vision while continuing to hit your short-term goals. Start at the End offers inspiring stories of other business owners and entrepreneurs who have achieved significant success, as well as easy-to-follow exercises. You’ll learn how to:

  • Build a company you can sell for millions of dollars
  • Create vision statements from a customer perspective and from a business perspective that increase your sales and profits
  • Develop a realistic business and financial model based on market data
  • Systematize your business and minimize mistakes
  • Build the strongest marketing system in your industry
  • Increase your conversion rates and the lifetime value of your customers
  • Improve the performance and productivity of your employees

Start at the End gives you a chance to take a step back, reevaluate your business, and redesign your business plan to achieve the success you dreamed of when you first launched your company.

Nov 30th 2012, 17:35

After Bradley Manning's very serious appearance on the stand during his pretrial hearing yesterday, the man facing charges for the Wikileaks security breach has in his testimony today unleashed this truth of Iraq that America may never unlearn: It was impossible, Manning says, to get the stench of Iraq off the underwear he wore during his deployment. It's supposed to be funny maybe? Or dramatic? Maybe both? Anyway, this all has to do with whether or not Manning was being punished too severely, which is not funny at all. Manning is currently being cross-examined and was discussing the details of his time at Quantico, Virginia, and his request for new underwear. Journalist Kevin Gosztola, who's at the trial, reports

December 10, 2010 – Manning needed underwear and t-shirts. He still had what he wore during his deployment. “They still smelled like Iraq…No matter how many times it got washed it just never went away.” The gallery laughed. Maj. Ashden Fein, cross-examining him, appeared to be holding back a laugh too.

Stay tuned for more details.

Colorado Drug Investigators Concerned Over Legalizing Marijuana
Nov 30th 2012, 17:18

DENVER (CBS4)- The head of the Colorado Drug Investigators Association believes that voters in Colorado were duped by Amendment 64 and that legalizing marijuana will be a fiasco.

The harsh prediction comes as Gov. John Hickenlooper sets up a task force to deal with implementing the measure on the state level and corresponding with federal law which maintains that marijuana in any form or amount is illegal.

“It’s going to create a huge fiasco,” said Colorado Drug Investigators Association spokesman Ernie Martinez.

Martinez believes marijuana will be too easy to obtain.

“We’re going to see a marked increase among drug use for youth and teens for the simple reason availability is going to increase,” said Martinez.

The concerns include the availability of marijuana in shops and cafes, being legal for convicted felons and the mentally ill, difficulty controlling residential growing and car accidents involving people under the influence.

“Like big tobacco duped the public into thinking tobacco is good for you, the voters were duped into voting that marijuana was good for them,” said Martinez.

Others perceive a different future with legalization of marijuana.

“This measure is going to show people that legalization is positive, safe, saves us money, keeps the courts from being clogged up with marijuana cases,” said attorney Rob Correy.

Correy also predicts that marijuana tourism will soon make Colorado a destination.

According to the CDIA website, “The Mission of the Colorado Drug Investigators Association (CDIA) is to unite peace officers and other professionals who share a common interest in drug enforcement, in a collaborative effort to reduce the supply and demand of illicit drugs and illegally diverted legal drugs by providing quality training, open information exchange and speaking with one voice in support of effective legislation.”

Opinion: Susan Rice Thrown Under Democrat's Bus And Tied Down
Nov 30th 2012, 17:00

The Right Politics

As President Barack Obama, the White House, the Democratic Party politicians and the nation’s “leftists” allege that the Republicans – led by the Senators in Congress – are picking on the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, it is becoming more and more clear that it was not only those liberal-leaning politicians who threw her under the bus, but they are also the ones who are keeping her under the bus.

Though Rice has been the perfect and dutiful “fall gal” for the Benghazi, Libya tale of an anti-Islamic film being the reason for the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack which killed four Americans including the United States Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stephens, her reward of being named Hillary Clinton’s replacement as United States Secretary of State seems to be vanishing more and more each day.

Her meetings with the Republican senators this week didn’t help her status at all. While the “left” continue to say the Republicans are picking on her, it’s becoming apparent that she is saying nothing that makes any unbiased person believe she had good reason to tell the “wrong story” about Benghazi on five television shows five days after the Benghazi terrorist attack.

Then, the latest travesty in the Susan Rice saga is the public information regarding her finances. It is now revealed that she is a multi-millionaire – to put it extremely mildly. The Democratic Party which has nothing kind to say about the nation’s wealthy and rode a year-long political campaign for president by disrespecting anyone of wealth in this country has another top achiever in its Party who is found to be grossly wealthy. The story that came out this week reveals that Rice owns anywhere from $300,002 to $600,000 in shares of stock in TransCanada – a company which, by the way, is trying to get approval to build the politically controversial Keystone XL pipeline. Beyond that, sources say that one-third of her extreme wealth is in foreign – not domestic – stocks.

As analysts and pundits trace the sources of her now-public controversial finances, it is reported that it is the political “left” that is revealing this latest information. Basically, it’s the “left” that is keeping Rice under the bus she was thrown under in September as it moves forwards and backwards, forwards and backwards, forwards and backwards, dirtying her public reputation and hopes of an advancement in Washington, D.C. The assumptions are several, all of which are not good for Susan Rice. She is assumed to have been continuously kept in the Benghazi, Libya headlines in an effort to keep President Barack Obama, the White House, and others out of the headlines. How long this effort to keep the spotlight on Rice instead of higher-ups succeeds is anybody’s guess. There is little chance, of course, that it will continue for four years throughout Obama’s entire second term.

As the negative stories pile on against Susan Rice and the sources of the information continue to lead back to her own political party, it is just a matter of time before Obama steps before the American people and offers a replacement other than Susan Rice for Secretary of State. After all, there is no hope that she will be confirmed by Congress with all these negative impressions trailing her.

The iPhone is quickly becoming the “go to” gadget for fans of photography and video and many are now using these features for business and marketing purposes. Enter Grant Wicks, a.k.a. “Professor Gadget,” Vice President of Business Development for Wasp Barcode Technologies and a Top 100 SMB Influencer. Grant has sourced many useful gadgets and turned his iPhone into a one man media studio for conducting on-the-go interviews.  Tune in as he joins Brent Leary to share some of these special finds so that you, too, can make the best use of the iPhone for business.

* * * * *

iphone photo and video for businessSmall Business Trends: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

Grant Wickes: I've been steeped in the technology world for 25, almost 30 years.  It has always been on the marketing and sales side of things with software companies.

Small Business Trends: What compelled you to get into “interview mode” at conferences?  To find all of these cools tools to turn your iPhone into a full blown production kit?

Grant Wickes: I don't come from T.V.  I don't come from radio.  I am not a big expert on these things.  But I have a passion to interact with folks.  As you said, going around to the various conferences.

I like to take photographs. I have all of the high end equipment, a big Cannon Digital SLR, with all the big lenses, which is fantastic. But I don't want to bring all of that stuff with me on the road. Then the iPhone came out and it really became an interesting platform.

I collapsed it down and found the iPhone really became the platform for me to be able to do photography. I got into it, this thing is a fantastic video machine.  So I did not have to bother with the camcorder any more.

Small Business Trends:  Can you talk about how you make them look good and sound great using the iPhone?

Grant Wickes: Sound is something people will not tolerate if there’s crackling. The iPhone has a built in microphone, but honestly, it's just a cheap little mic inside the phone.

With a little research, now you can get adaptable microphones.  There is one by Belkin that's called an iPhone Boom Mic that plugs right into your ear piece for the iPhone and sticks out about 4 or 5 inches and I can go around talking to people.

The second approach is the little lavalier mic that all the T.V. guys put on their collar. There is an adaptable unit from Audio Technica for $20. I can get a lavalier mic with a 20 foot cord, with another little $20 adapter that converts into the iPhone plug in. Now I have studio quality sound for an interview.

The other one, the Boom Mike, was around $40.

Small Business Trends: How do you get great lighting from a picture you take from your iPhone?

Grant Wickes: If you are out at an event or in a spot, you look for natural light. It is always the best approach. If I can get an outdoor setting where the sun is in the back, or if I can get an indoor sitting area that has a glass enclosure where outside light is coming in, that is always superb to do that.

But let's face it, we don't always have that luxury. For $30 for both, I have bought a couple of different LED lights. These things are small little white lights I turn on.

I have a bracket I can fit on the iPhone so that the light now shoots off to the side. It hangs out to the right side of the iPhone.  Because one of the things you try to avoid with light is having it directly in someone's face.

An iPhone with this little case for $23, with a $13 extension heading out there, with a $30 LED light, and $30 microphone, and I've got gadgets on the go.  I have studio quality on a shoe string budget.

I have these little gadgets in my bag. I can immediately have a quick conversation, it leads to an interesting discussion. Within less than five minutes, I am up and running. In less than ten minutes, you and I have finished the conversation. I have content that I can put up and share with my customers, or clients, or business prospects.

Small Business Trends: Did you see any difference, in terms of views or clicks, in the way people perceived the content?

Grant Wickes: There is no doubt. The good old days where you can have your flip cam and all of that noise in the background – that's really not acceptable anymore. So I do see it. I see it through Google Analytics the continued use and sharing of these video snippets that I take.

Small Business Trends: Where can people see these tips that you have talked about?

Grant Wickes: I am putting up a robust set on my Pinterest.

Small Business Trends: Where can people find some of these tools and these little gadgets?

Grant Wickes: There are two primary places I go for my gadgets. One is called Photojojo.  They are a fantastic little gadgets spot for iPhones.  Another is B&H Photo Video. It’s based in New York and is a store for photography.  They have all of these little gadgets I’ve picked up.

I didn't even talk to you about the 8x zoom lens I got from Photojojo to do shots. So we have to talk again Brent. There’s too much stuff to share with everyone in a short amount of time.

Small Business Trends: Since you mentioned that, what is that called?

Grant Wickes: That one is iPhone Lens by Photojojo. It is an 8x lens.  Now they have one for the iPhone 5 that takes you 12x. So it is like having a 600mm lens on your iPhone. It is $35. It's just fantastic!
