Why Can't All the Ads be Like These?
Oct 1st 2012, 06:36

Written by Dominic Dezzutti

I wasn't sure if it was the proximity of the big DU debate or the fact that is was a football Sunday and local viewership was bound to be high, but Sunday afternoon featured two high quality Presidential campaign ads that weren't entirely negative and over the top.

The ads were done so well that I wondered aloud why all ads couldn't be this way. Obviously, the ads were highly thought of by the campaigns, or why would they put them in a high profile place like a Broncos/Raiders game?

The ads themselves were simple and direct. Both featured the candidate themselves, alone, speaking directly to the camera about what they would do if elected. Both ads were beyond the normal thirty seconds, but not overly lengthy. The tone for both was calm and frankly, positive.

Both ads gave me the impression that if either candidate had an opportunity to speak directly to voters in their living rooms for one minute, this is what they would say.

For everyone who despises the thirty second negative ads that accuse the candidate's opponent of doing things that would make John Gotti blush, these ads would seem to be exactly what the doctor ordered.

In fact, without finding a real criticism of either ad, I had to dig deep to figure out why on Earth viewers haven't seen more ads like this on a more regular basis.

Then it came to me. We haven't seen ads like this throughout the campaign because they don't work very well.

If they worked well, we would see them throughout the election season. Political campaigns are nothing if not practical.

The reality is that as an audience, we are fairly hypocritical about what we consider a high quality ad, and what actually influences our vote. A straight-forward, direct and sensible ad should be exactly what all of us want to hear and moreover, what all of us should respond to.

However, although we say, and even in our hearts believe, that these kinds of ads are what we want to see, we don't respond to them very well. We may complain about the negative ads. We may whine about them and even threaten to tune out due to them, but in the end, the negative ads work.

That's a shame, because the ads that I saw on Sunday afternoon were nearly inspiring. They elevated the process and made me long for days that an election season was something that citizens could look forward to, not simply trudge through.

I am confident that both campaigns have done the requisite research about the ads and if they are proven to work, they may come back. But I don't think it's likely. I think they were used for a specific purpose to attract a very particular voter and will be quickly replaced by the ads we are used to.

That's too bad. Those other ads give us a glimpse of what elections could be, and not as they are.

Oh well, it was nice to live in a fantasy election season, even it was for just a little while.About The Blogger

Curse of Too Much VC Funding
Oct 1st 2012, 06:00

Nearly every fledgling start-up could use a bit more cash in the beginning. But too much of a good thing can be downright dangerous.

Too much of a good thing can hurt your start-up--especially when that thing is VC money.

Just look at the much-hyped start-up Color, Atlantic reporter Matthew O'Brien says.

In an attempt to outdo the social media giants, Color talked big in 2010, but never managed to live up to expectations. Part of the problem, O’Brien argues, was the high monetary stakes put on it before its debut. Color raised $41 million pre-launch, a record-setting number, and Google even offered to buy it for $200 million before it had an actual product. Come launch day, it flopped, garnering just two stars in the Apple app store.

These days, when a start-up fails, often its next move is a pivot--that's when a company methodically tries to find success with a different product or business model. But Color flailed. According to O'Brien, the sheer amount of venture funding may have made the difference.

Because there was so much hype surrounding Color, it never participated in beta testing or hung out in stealth mode. Companies like Instagram were able to pivot (from social-sharing company Burbn) quietly and tactfully. Instagram founder Kevin Systrom tested the photo-sharing product in stealth mode and created an app that could outdo competitors like Hipstamtic before it launched. With a meager (in comparison) and partially self-funded $500,000 in seed capital, Instagram didn’t have the pressure or the attention Color did with big name backers like Bain and Sequoia Capital.

Since its launch in 2010, Color has “flailed” three times. It tried to be a social app meant to connect you with people in your vicinity who shared your interests. Next, it was an app meant for events--it used Facebook data to connect you with someone from your town attending, say, the same baseball game as you. Now, it’s something akin to a video version of Instagram.

O’Brien says the curse of Color was, at the root, in its massive amount of "seed" funding. There was little time and too much hype for founder and CEO Bill Nguyen to find a workable product that he could bring to market.

“Instagram was the perfect product in the perfect market at the perfect time. Color was… not,” O’Brien writes. “It had bad execution, worse marketing, and a conceit that was at best ahead of its time. Its massive pre-launch raise didn't create those problems, but it did make them more likely."

A lot went wrong at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on September 11, but according to new interviews with the staff, the staff should've been better prepared. That might seem like an obvious conclusion to draw with an event like this. However, based on what we know now, the attack was a long time coming, and the security measures taken just weren't as effective as they expected them to be.

The trouble started back in June, when there was a small bombing outside of the consulate. They'd just recently upgraded the security at the compound with a team of American Special Forces soldiers and newly trained Libyan guards. And after the bombing, everyone agreed: they did a great job! "That the local security did so well back in June probably gave us a false sense of security," one staffer told The New York Times. "We may have fooled ourselves."

In its newly published play-by-play of the incident, The Times paints an unsettling picture of the Americans getting blindsided by their attackers. "With as few as four armed Americans and three armed Libyans guarding the mission as the attack began, [Ambassador Christopher] Stevens's own bodyguard was so far away that he needed to sprint across the compound under gunfire to reach the building where the ambassador was working at the time," the paper reads. "But the bodyguard ultimately left without Mr. Stevens, who died of smoke inhalation." All the while, the attackers were raining down rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and gunfire onto the compound.

The new details don't necessarily help the president who's been struggling to explain exactly what went wrong that day. While their story's changed a couple of times since September 11, U.S. intelligence agencies have most recently said that the attack was "deliberate and organized" which takes a little bit of the air out of the initial idea that they were caught off guard by an angry mob protesting against the "Innocence of Muslims" video. And as recently as last Friday, the government's pushed back at further investigation, saying that the area is too volatile for the FBI to go in and do their thing.

This is certainly not the last time we'll be hearing about what happened in Benghazi a couple of weeks ago. Barack Obama will undoubtedly have to answer some tough questions as we dive into the final five weeks of the election. And you'd better be sure Mitt Romney will be one of the ones asking them.

Despite the government tax breaks and obvious low fuel costs, capitalism is taking its toll on the electric car industry. According to a new report in The New York Times, dismal sales figures are leading some auto manufacturers to pull back on the new Earth-saving, plug-and-go automobile technology in favor of the less efficient hybrid engine. As the Paris Motor Show ramps up, a number of automotive executives opened up about the reality of the burgeoning electric car industry. In short, it's going to be burgeoning for quite some time.

"We had a realistic view of the technology all along," Volkswagon CEO Martin Winterkorn said. "There will be, for a long time to come, no alternative to the internal combustion engine." Volkswagon, the largest automaker in Europe, has put its electric car ambitions on hold as it pursues the better-selling plug in hybrid models. Renault already has an electric car on the market, t the Fluence ZE but one of its executives said that despite Renault being the market leader in electric vehicles, he's "not happy about the size of the market." Despite rave reviews for the Fluence when it first came out last year, the company has only sold 15,000 of them so far.

Things are no different for the trailblazers in the business, Nissan. News emerged last week that Nissan was coming up well short of its sales goals for its own electric car, the Leaf. Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn set a goal for the company to double sales of the Leaf this fiscal year, but halfway through, they're only up by 9 percent. Meanwhile, dealers are whipping out every discount they can think of to try and move Nissan Leafs off their lots. But even that doesn't work too well all the time. Nissan ended up buying back a pair of Leafs in Arizona after the owners were unhappy with the battery life.

Nobody would dispute the fact that electric cars make great sense in the long term. And over time the technology will get better, the batteries will last longer and the cars themselves probably won't look as silly. Until then, enjoy paying $4.50 a gallon for gas.

When the press embargo for the Kindle Paperwhite lifted on Sunday night, seemingly everyone in the tech blogosphere seemed to sing its praises in unison. The new e-reader, now at the bottom end of Amazon's lineup of devices, just got a pretty noticeable facelift with a new front-lit screen, a thinner profile and faster performance. Based on the tone of the reviews, though, this thing might as well be made out of chocolate-covered diamonds, it's so stunning.

If you listen to the tech bloggers, you won't even think about buying another e-reader. TechCrunch's John Biggs called the Kindle Paperwhite "a reader's dream" and said he was "wildly impressed with the simplicity and beauty of this device." Gizmodo really swung for the fences. Giving it an overall score of 9 out of 10, The Verge's Joshua Topolsky raved about the screen, "one of the best E Ink displays on the market," and said that Amazon "just took the game to a whole new level" with the Paperwhite. GigaOm's Laura Hazard Own raved about the quicker processor and the   adjustable lighting on the brand new bright, white screen. Gizmodo's Kyle Wagner really swung for the fences and said without delay that the Kindle Paperwhite "is the best ereader you can buy."

What's all the fuss about? Well, everyone seems to agree that the new screen is just terrific to look at, and Amazon's front-lighting set up works really well. Beyond that, it feel nice in your hands with its soft touch paint finish and light weight of only 7.5 ounces. The battery life is longer. With fewer buttons and more touchscreen capabilities, it's sleeker. Amazon also made an iPad Smart Case-like leather cover that uses magnets to turn the display on when you open it up. And with prices starting at $119, it's really affordable.

More broadly speaking, the enthusiastic reception of Amazon's latest gadget bodes well for the company's credibility as a hardware producer. With the bestselling e-readers and a tablet lineup that can compete with the iPad, Amazon is becoming a serious contender in the marketplace, and it's showing everyone that it can undercut competitors prices but still produce impressive devices. Now, we all get to sit back and see if they've got the gall to take on the iPhone.

Residents To Cash In On Parking For Presidential Debate
Oct 1st 2012, 02:09

DENVER (CBS4) – Some people living around the University of Denver are offering up parking spaces for cash knowing that parking could be a challenge for people driving their own cars to the presidential debate on Wednesday.

There have been several ads on Craigslist. Parking is very restrictive around DU as many streets have time limits and some require residential permits.

The city of Denver says that residential parking permits are in place to help guarantee the residents spots in front of their own homes as the streets can get quite crowded during events.

Some have permit stickers in their windshields and are also given two guest passes. Those may be what some people are offering for sale for the day.

Some people are offering space in their driveway.

“I’m self employed, so every little bit helps,” resident Kristi Pohly said.

Parking enforcement officers will be all over the area during the debate and extremely busy. Parking violations on residential streets cost $25.

Residents calling to have someone towed or ticked may have a bit of a wait on Wednesday because of the massive amounts of traffic.

Police: Woman Lied About Carjacking So Boyfriend Could Escape
Oct 1st 2012, 01:42

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – A woman told police a man carjacked and kidnapped her at gunpoint, but according to police, it was all a lie.

State troopers followed a car with expired tags Sunday morning at Kipling and Bowles. The driver then jumped from the vehicle and ran away. The passenger told troopers the man had carjacked her from the Colorado Mills Mall.

The lie also impacted more than 2,400 residents in a two-mile area of the neighborhood as homes were called with a reverse 911 warning people about a dangerous man.

Jefferson County deputies and state troopers were seen with guns drawn, checking cars and businesses in a shopping center near Bowles and Kipling. Police also spent several hours questioning the young women with two different hair colors.

State Patrol identified the woman as Stephanie Borge, 20. She’s facing a charge of false reporting.

Police were looking for a young man who they say is Borge’s boyfriend.

“I heard the siren on the police vehicle, I saw the SUV come veering in and the trooper right behind him,” witness Kevin Miller said. “Before the car even stopped, a gentleman hopped out of the passenger side and just started running.”

“It’s a dangerous situation. There still is a man out there that is armed and dangerous in the area,” Trooper Nicholas Carnivale said.

The authorities are trying to confirm if the man had a weapon. The suspect is described as a white male with a brown hair and brown shorts.

Congressional Candidates To Debate In Westminster
Oct 1st 2012, 01:22

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (AP) – It’s October in an election year – that means political debates are heating up.

At least four Denver-area congressmen are headed to Westminster for a candidate forum at the Metro North Chamber of Commerce. Democratic Reps. Ed Perlmutter and Jared Polis are scheduled to appear and debate their Republican challengers, Joe Coors and Kevin Lundberg.

Republican Rep. Cory Gardner will face Democrat Brandon Shaffer, and Republican Rep. Mike Coffman will also appear. Coffman’s Democratic opponent, Joe Miklosi, declined to attend, citing a scheduling conflict.

Colorado’s seven-seat House delegation is now held by four Republicans and three Democrats. That means that any seat changing hands could give Democrats control of the entire House delegation from Colorado.
