JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – A woman told police a man carjacked and kidnapped her at gunpoint, but according to police, it was all a lie.
State troopers followed a car with expired tags Sunday morning at Kipling and Bowles. The driver then jumped from the vehicle and ran away. The passenger told troopers the man had carjacked her from the Colorado Mills Mall.
The lie also impacted more than 2,400 residents in a two-mile area of the neighborhood as homes were called with a reverse 911 warning people about a dangerous man.
Jefferson County deputies and state troopers were seen with guns drawn, checking cars and businesses in a shopping center near Bowles and Kipling. Police also spent several hours questioning the young women with two different hair colors.
State Patrol identified the woman as Stephanie Borge, 20. She’s facing a charge of false reporting.
Police were looking for a young man who they say is Borge’s boyfriend.
“I heard the siren on the police vehicle, I saw the SUV come veering in and the trooper right behind him,” witness Kevin Miller said. “Before the car even stopped, a gentleman hopped out of the passenger side and just started running.”
“It’s a dangerous situation. There still is a man out there that is armed and dangerous in the area,” Trooper Nicholas Carnivale said.
The authorities are trying to confirm if the man had a weapon. The suspect is described as a white male with a brown hair and brown shorts.
